Leandra Andrade was initially arrested on a child abuse charge after her daughter suffered a fatal medical emergency on Aug. 1, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.
Police and EMS workers responded to the Cutty Sark Motel on the 3600 block of Atlantic Avenue, where they pronounced the toddler dead at the scene around 3:30 a.m. that morning, authorities said.
While authorities worked to investigate how the child died, Andrade was brought to a local hospital for treatment, they said.
The cause of death was eventually determined to be a homicide, according to a Thursday, Oct. 27 update posted by police.
As a result of the autopsy findings, Andrade has been additionally charged with second-degree murder. Authorities did not specify the cause of death.
Andrade remains held in Virginia Beach City Jail, where she was served with the new charge.
